An ATM includes a user interface having a display device. The display device includes a flexible display panel. The display panel can be flexed to limit the displayed information to only the field of view of the current ATM user. The curvature of the display panel can be changed by a moving device to correspond to the settings assigned to the current ATM user responsive to identifying input received from the user.
A method and apparatus for an electronic substrate having a plurality of semiconductor devices is described. A thin film of nanowires is formed on a substrate. The thin film of nanowires is formed to have a sufficient density of nanowires to achieve an operational current level. A plurality of semiconductor regions are defined in the thin film of nanowires. Contacts are formed at the semiconductor device regions to thereby provide electrical connectivity to the plurality of semiconductor devices. Furthermore, various materials for fabricating nanowires, thin films including p-doped nanowires and n-doped nanowires, nanowire heterostructures, light emitting nanowire heterostructures, flow masks for positioning nanowires on substrates, nanowire spraying techniques for depositing nanowires, techniques for reducing or eliminating phonon scattering of electrons in nanowires, and techniques for reducing surface states in nanowires are described.
A thin-film transistor includes a gate electrode having first and second gate electrode edges on opposed sides, and a drain electrode having a first edge that overlaps the first gate electrode edge, and a second edge that overlaps the second gate electrode edge. A diode array is fabricated by successive deposition of a conductive layer, a doped semiconductor layer and an undoped semiconductor layer adjacent to the substrate. A display pixel unit provides reduced capacitative coupling between a pixel electrode and a source line. The source line includes an extension that provides a source for the transistor. A patterned conductive portion is disposed adjacent to the source line. Another display pixel unit provides reduced pixel electrode voltage shifts using a source line and a balance line.

A gray scale bistable electro-optic display is driven by storing a look-up table containing data representing the impulses necessary for transitions, storing data representing at least an initial state of each pixel of the display, storing data representing temporal and gray level prior states of each pixel, receiving an input signal representing a desired final state of at least one pixel of the display; and generating an output signal representing the impulse necessary for a transition, as determined from the look-up table, dependent upon the temporal and gray level prior states. Other similar methods for driving such displays are also disclosed.
A display comprises spaced first and second electrodes, and a plurality of electrochromic nanoparticles disposed between the electrodes, each of the nanoparticles having an electron-rich state and an electron-depleted state, the two states differing in at least one optical characteristic. Upon injection of charge from one of the electrodes, the nanoparticles switch between their electron-rich and electron-depleted states, thus changing an optical characteristic of the display.

The invention provides "engineered" nonlinear nanocomposite materials with an extremely large .chi..sup.(3) and fast temporal response along with optical properties that can be precisely tuned to satisfy the requirements of a particular application (e.g., optical, thermal, mechanical, etc.). In particular, the magnitude of the linear and nonlinear index of refraction can be adjusted substantially independently of the absorption spectrum of the material. In addition, the optical characteristics can be engineered substantially independently from the mechanical and chemical characteristics, providing exceptional performance and flexibility in terms of device-incorporation and process-stability.
